Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Clinical Assessments
Compassionate, Ethical, and Comprehensive Evaluations
For some individuals living with mental health conditions, an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) may serve as an important component of an overall treatment plan by providing comfort, companionship, and emotional support.
At Glasshouse Effect Psychotherapy Center, I provide comprehensive clinical evaluations to determine whether an Emotional Support Animal is clinically appropriate based on your individual mental health needs and current functioning.
Every assessment is conducted in accordance with professional ethical standards and applicable federal and state guidelines. Because every person’s circumstances are unique, an ESA recommendation is not guaranteed and is based solely on clinical judgment following a thorough evaluation.
What Is an Emotional Support Animal?
An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) provides comfort and emotional support to individuals experiencing qualifying mental or emotional health conditions.
Unlike service animals, ESAs are not individually trained to perform specific tasks. Instead, their therapeutic benefit is based on the emotional support they provide as part of an individual’s overall mental health treatment.
The Clinical Assessment Process
Each evaluation includes:
- A comprehensive clinical interview
- Review of your current mental health concerns
- Assessment of functional impairment
- Discussion of your treatment history
- Evaluation of whether an Emotional Support Animal is clinically appropriate
- Opportunity to ask questions about the process
If, after the evaluation, it is determined that an Emotional Support Animal is clinically indicated, you will receive a professionally prepared ESA recommendation letter that reflects my clinical findings and professional judgment.
Please note that the issuance of an ESA letter is never guaranteed and is based solely on the outcome of the clinical assessment.
Who May Benefit From an ESA Assessment?
Individuals experiencing emotional or psychological conditions that significantly impact daily functioning may benefit from discussing whether an Emotional Support Animal is appropriate as part of their overall treatment plan.
Examples may include individuals experiencing:
- Anxiety Disorders
- Depression
- Trauma-Related Disorders
- Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Other qualifying mental health conditions, when clinically appropriate
An ESA assessment does not replace ongoing mental health treatment but may serve as one component of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does completing an assessment guarantee an ESA letter?
No. An ESA recommendation is based solely on clinical judgment following a comprehensive mental health evaluation. Ethical practice requires that recommendations be made only when clinically appropriate.
Are ESA letters accepted everywhere?
No. Requirements vary by housing providers and applicable laws. While an ESA recommendation letter may support requests for reasonable accommodations where permitted by law, acceptance is ultimately determined by the requesting entity and applicable regulations.
Do I need to be an existing therapy client?
No. Individuals may schedule an ESA clinical assessment independently of ongoing psychotherapy services.
